The discovery of of the Slough Cavern system was made during the construction of the Tescos Magastore on Wellington Street in Slough Berskire on 3 November 2005 by Micheal Fink of WS Atkins contractors.
In Michaels words: I was breaking some ground from the JCB using the hydraulic chisel when all of a sudden the tool head just sank into the ground. We got out to look at what we'd found thinking it was a secondry basement area not on the plans at that was that. At first we didn't think much of it, it looked like a small naturally formed fissure. We knew we'd have to stop work until its extent was determined and we didn't think much more of it. It wasn't until John Smith of the ground Investigation team carried out some preliminary exploration of the newly discovered hollow that they realised that there was more to this than met the eye. In Johns words: I peared into the hole made by the JCB with a torch, it isn't unusual to find hollows like this and i was expecting some kind of historic basement. However, I could sense a breeze which was very strange. A preliminary examination with the torch revealed a long passage some two feet wide angled at about 70 degrees straight down. The light shone down some 30m and then the passage turned in another direction. The most amazing thing was the luminous vegettion growing on the walls. After a few days the WS Atkins geophyisical team prepared the area for a more direct and penetrating examination of the feature. From there, the rest is history.
